Republicans mocked after marking Presidents Day by insulting Biden – and praising Nixon and Trump

A Presidents’ Day joke from the official Republican Party Twitter feed has been ridiculed for disrespecting Joe Biden while hailing Richard Nixon as among the “great US presidents”.

Borrowing the meme of the “not you” grid, the party singled out eight past Republican presidents for praise: Abraham Lincoln, Calvin Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, Nixon, Ronald Reagan, both George Bushes, and of course, Donald Trump.

Mr Biden, meanwhile, is shown wearing a mask designed to stop the spread of Covid-19, which Donald Trump famously contracted late in his presidency.

The reaction to the bizarrely pro-Nixon message was swift and caustic, with anti-Republican commentators and tweeters seizing on the implications immediately – and pointing out that unlike Nixon, who resigned from office before being formally ejected by Congress, Donald Trump was in fact impeached twice for alleged crimes committed during his tenure.

Others noted that the party included Nixon at the expense of other Republicans, including Gerald Ford (who pardoned him), Teddy Roosevelt, or Ulysses S Grant.

Others still pointed out that the eight men selected for elevation in contrast to Biden would hardly have agreed with the selection as a whole.

Others on the right who reject Trumpism as a philosophy issued more general objections. As former Tea Party Republican turned Trump opponent Joe Walsh tweeted: “Every day, the @GOP does or says something to make me feel really good about my decision two years ago to leave the Republican Party. Every single day.”

Conservative commentator Bill Kristol, meanwhile, offered this view: “This is mostly juvenile and vulgar. But we are on the verge of war in Europe. It would be good if elected Republicans, GOP candidates, those who’ve served in Republican administrations--made it clear @GOP does not speak for what remains of a decent and patriotic Republican Party.”

Donald Trump Sentenced in Hush Money Trial Involving Porn Star Stormy Daniels. By Don Terry | Tuesday, January 14, 2025 | 2 min read In a landmark case that has captivated the nation, former President Donald Trump has been sentenced after being convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The charges stemmed from a hush money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. Despite the guilty verdict, the court handed down an unconditional discharge, meaning Trump will face no further penalties, including imprisonment or community service. The allegations centered on claims that Trump orchestrated the payment to Daniels to silence her allegations of an affair. Prosecutors argued that the payment was fraudulently recorded in business ledgers, violating state law. The jury ultimately sided with the prosecution, but the sentencing judge issued a rare and controversial ruling, granting unconditional discharge. Legal analysts have n...

Sam Cooke: The Rise, Legacy, and the Unsolved Mystery of an Icon's Tragic Death. By Ben Emos | Tuesday, January 21, 2025 | 6 min read In a poorly lit Los Angeles motel room, the echoes of a gunshot shattered the night, marking the tragic end of one of music's brightest stars. Sam Cooke, the smooth-voiced crooner behind timeless hits like “A Change is Gonna Come” and “You Send Me,” lay lifeless on the cold floor. Decades later, the circumstances surrounding his death remain clouded by whispers of conspiracy and cover-ups. Was it truly a case of self-defense, or was there more to the story? This enduring mystery has left many wondering why Hollywood has seemingly turned a blind eye to solving it. Cooke’s ascendant to stardom coincided with a period of profound social change in America. As the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum, Cooke stood at the intersection of music and activism, using his voice to advocate for justice and equality. Inspired by his own experiences, he refus...

Donald Trump's Greenland Proposal: A Threat to NATO and a Gift to Vladimir Putin

Donald Trump's Greenland Proposal: A Threat to NATO and a Gift to Vladimir Putin By Ben Emos & Don Terry | Wednesday, January 15, 2025 | 2 min read Donald Trump’s intentions regarding the world’s largest island remain uncertain, but he has not ruled out the possibility of resorting to military threats against a NATO member. Such a move could invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. This prospect poses a significant diplomatic challenge for the alliance, potentially destabilizing its cohesion and advancing Vladimir Putin’s goal of undermining NATO’s unity. During a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump suggested he could not dismiss the idea of using military or economic pressure to acquire Greenland—or even the Panama Canal. Adding fuel to speculation, his son, Donald Trump Jr., visited Greenland, raising questions about their intentions. The U.S. already maintains the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, a...
